    Roots: Mutation frequency decline revisited.Evelyn M. Witkin - 1994 - Bioessays 16 (6):437-444.
Abstract‘Mutation frequency decline’ (MFD) was discovered about forty years ago, and described as the disappearance of a particular class of ultraviolet light‐induced mutations in Escherichia coli that occurred whenever protein synthesis was briefly inhibited immediately after irradiation. Later, MFD was interpreted as an excision repair anomaly uniquely affecting nonsense suppressor mutations induced in certain tRNA genes. Never fully understood, MFD has recently been linked to the newly discovered transcription‐coupled rapid repair of ultraviolet damage on the templat strand of active genes. (...)

Dementia, Sex, and Consent: Beyond the Uncomplicated Cases.Jed Adam Gross & Evelyn M. Tenenbaum - 2023 - Hastings Center Report 53 (3):45-47.
This commentary responds to Samuel Director's article “Dementia and Concurrent Consent to Sexual Relations,” in the May‐June 2023 issue of the Hastings Center Report. In the article, Director sets out a set of conditions for sexual consent after one partner in a committed, long‐term relationship develops dementia. While we share Director's view that dementia patients should not be categorically cut off from sexual intimacy, we caution against the use of his approach as a rigid test for allowing sexual activity. Director's (...)

The Correspondence of Walter Benjamin, 1910-1940.Gershom Scholem, Theodor W. Adorno, Manfred R. Jacobson & Evelyn M. Jacobson (eds.) - 2012 - University of Chicago Press.
Called “the most important critic of his time” by Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin has only become more influential over the years, as his work has assumed a crucial place in current debates over the interactions of art, culture, and meaning. A “natural and extraordinary talent for letter writing was one of the most captivating facets of his nature,” writes Gershom Scholem in his Foreword to this volume; and Benjamin's correspondence reveals the evolution of some of his most powerful ideas, while (...)

Navigating the multidimensionality of social media presence: ethical considerations and recommendations for psychologists.Evelyn A. Hunter, Alexis Jones & Kareema M. Smith - 2023 - Ethics and Behavior 33 (1):18-36.
ABSTRACT To date, the American Psychological Association Ethical Standards and Code of Conduct does not include direct guidance about how psychologists should navigate social media. Given the variety of roles psychologists can choose to engage on social media, it is imperative that guidelines are established. These guidelines should consider the multidimensionality that exists as psychologists may choose to present on social media through a personal presence, a business presence, and/or even an influencer/content creator presence. Specific ethical considerations and recommendations are (...)

Research With Controlled Drugs: Why and Why Not? Response to Open Peer Commentaries on “An Ethical Exploration of Barriers to Research on Controlled Drugs”.Michael H. Andreae, Evelyn Rhodes, Tyler Bourgoise, George M. Carter, Robert S. White, Debbie Indyk, Henry Sacks & Rosamond Rhodes - 2016 - American Journal of Bioethics 16 (4):1-3.
We examine the ethical, social, and regulatory barriers that may hinder research on therapeutic potential of certain controversial controlled substances like marijuana, heroin, or ketamine. Hazards for individuals and society and potential adverse effects on communities may be good reasons for limiting access and justify careful monitoring of these substances. Overly strict regulations, fear of legal consequences, stigma associated with abuse and populations using illicit drugs, and lack of funding may, however, limit research on their considerable therapeutic potential. We review (...)

People enroll in medical research for many reasons ranging from decisions regarding their own or family members' health situation to broader considerations including access to health and financial resources. In socially vulnerable communities the choice to participate is often based on a risk-benefit assessment that goes beyond the medical aspects of the research, and considers the benefits received. In this qualitative study, we examined the motivations of Rwandan women to participate in a non-commercial collaborative research study examining the safety, acceptability, (...)

Effects of social network factors on information acquisition and adoption of improved groundnut varieties: the case of Uganda and Kenya.Mary Thuo, Alexandra A. Bell, Boris E. Social networks play a significant role in learning and thus in farmers’ adoption of new agricultural technologies. This study examined the effects of social network factors on information acquisition and adoption of new seed varieties among groundnut farmers in Uganda and Kenya. The data were generated through face-to-face interviews from a random sample of 461 farmers, 232 in Uganda and 229 in Kenya. To assess these effects two alternative econometric models were used: a seemingly unrelated bivariate probit model and a (...)

Cupiennius salei and Achaearanea tepidariorum: Spider models for investigating evolution and development.Alistair P. McGregor, Maarten Hilbrant, Matthias Pechmann, Evelyn E. Schwager, Nikola-Michael Prpic & Wim G. M. Damen - 2008 - Bioessays 30 (5):487-498.
The spiders Cupiennius salei and Achaearanea tepidariorum are firmly established laboratory models that have already contributed greatly to answering evolutionary developmental questions. Here we appraise why these animals are such useful models from phylogeny, natural history and embryogenesis to the tools available for their manipulation. We then review recent studies of axis formation, segmentation, appendage development and neurogenesis in these spiders and how this has contributed to understanding the evolution of these processes. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of comparisons of (...)

My title is taken from the frontispiece to Ogilby's translation of Aesop ; since every Renaissance poet believed the statement to be true, let me start with my own example. John Denham's only play, The Sophy, published in August 1642, is a tale about the perils of jealousy. The good prince Mirza, after a miraculous victory over the Turks, returns in glory to his father's court, but leaves it shortly thereafter. Genes in Development: Re-reading the Molecular Paradigm.Eva M. Neumann-Held, Christoph Rehmann-Sutter, Barbara Herrnstein Smith & E. Roy Weintraub (eds.) - 2006 - Duke University Press.
In light of scientific advances such as genomics, predictive diagnostics, genetically engineered agriculture, nuclear transfer cloning, and the manipulation of stem cells, the idea that genes carry predetermined molecular programs or blueprints is pervasive. Yet new scientific discoveries—such as rna transcripts of single genes that can lead to the production of different compounds from the same pieces of dna—challenge the concept of the gene alone as the dominant factor in biological development. Increasingly aware of the tension between certain empirical results (...)
